Laknäs, Saltholm, and Koster are three new collections of outdoor teak furniture that share an elegant and timeless design that perfectly fits all occasions during summertime. Skargaarden presents the new collections at Stockholm Furniture Fair in February 2023.

The Swedish province Dalarna is often regarded as a kind of epicenter for the Scandinavian Midsummer celebration. Along lake Siljan’s eastern shore in Dalarna lies the small village of Laknäs. Skargaarden’s Laknäs collection is designed by Daniel Lavonius Jarefeldt and was created for sun-drenched lunches and late meals in the enchanting and almost magical shadow play of the night light.

– Laknäs has a simple and straightforward design that is perfect for stylish pagan celebrations. At the same time, the combination of the clean design and the timeless expression of teak makes the furniture equally suitable on a roof terrace in Antibes or next to a lake in Sierra Nevada. Or why not indoors, says Jari Visuri, founder and CEO of Skargaarden.

The collection consists of a dining table, an extendable table, a dining chair, and a bench. The furniture has both an inviting and discreet expression and is suitable both as a solitaire and in a large and noisy crowded group that hosts a lively party.

Saltholm is a barely sixteen square kilometers large and extremely sparsely populated island in the sea between Copenhagen and Malmö – the linear distance is only one mile to both Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen and the Malmö skyscraper Turning Torso. Just a few residents live here all year round under spartan conditions.

– When we designed the Saltholm collection, we wanted to highlight the contrast between being close yet far away. Close to a glass of cava and small talk on a June evening when the sun hardly sets, and at the same time far away from everyday life and its demands. However, we have to admit that we didn’t fully succeed in incorporating the spartan feel of the island. The furniture is instead generously sized and comfortable, says Jari Visuri.

The Saltholm collection includes a sofa, a lounge chair, an ottoman, and a lounge table. The straight lines and timeless design make the furniture suitable for any outdoor environment. On the terrace or out in the garden. But it doesn’t look out of place in a cozy living room either. The seating pieces have an elegant, restrained shape that is balanced by the swelling, soft cushions that invite you to crawl up for a moment of relaxation.

In spring 2022, Swedish outdoor furniture brand Skargaarden launched Koster, a new range of dining chairs and tables that – like all Skargaarden furniture – is designed to weather the most demanding of environments and the harsh Scandinavian climate. The Koster range quickly became popular, and in December 2022, the Koster Dining chair was named the winner of the prestigious German Design Award
in the category ”Excellent Product Design – Furniture”. Now, Skargaarden presents additional lounge furniture that completes the Koster range.

”We are pleased to introduce the additional lounge series, which besides the lounge armchair, also contains two lounge tables and a sun bed. In addition, the dining tables are now available with mineral composite tabletops”, says Jari Visuri, founder and CEO of Skargaarden.

The first sketches of the Koster series were drawn up three years ago, and after tireless research and development, the complete collection with the lounge range added will be available in February 2023.
The name Koster was inspired by the extreme weather conditions of the Koster Islands, an archipelago on the west coast of Sweden where the vast majority of the islands are a nature reserve.

The design objective was to produce a simple pared-down form that can withstand the most demanding durability specifications and load tests. One such requirement was that the furniture could stand on a skyscraper rooftop without blowing away, making the design specs even more challenging.

”The idea for this series started because we lacked chairs and tables that lived up to what we needed in our own garden. We were looking for a comfy, uncomplicated, beautiful, and simple design. Chairs that are easy to sit in – even when you have a lot of chairs close together around the table. We wanted something so durable so that they can remain outside year-round”, says Jari Visuri.

The combination of function and design is just as important for outdoor furniture as for indoor furniture, if not even more so. Chairs and tables outside on the patio need to fulfill high standards such as withstanding heavy winds, rain, sub-zero temperatures, and blistering heat, requiring a lengthy design and development process. Koster, without a doubt, lives up to these requirements and expectations.

Skargaarden’s furniture is a tribute to the Scandinavian summer and an invitation to really take advantage of this short but very beautiful time. The furniture is created to be able to cope with a stressful outdoor climate and withstand everything that nature exposes them to – even in the harshest of coastal climates. At the same time, the furniture has a Scandinavian stripped-down character that makes it elegant enough to be uncompromisingly placed in a living room.

The fact that the Laknäs, Saltholm and Koster collections – like the majority of Skargaarden’s furniture – are made of teak is no coincidence. Teak is one of the most resilient types of wood and thanks to its elastic and strong fibers and the natural teak oil in the wood, it is very resistant to weather forces. Teak is an almost maintenance-free type of wood that acquires a beautiful greyish patina over time, but it can also be oiled to maintain the elegant reddish-brown teak tone.

About Skargaarden
Skargaarden is a Swedish brand with roots in Gävle. Traditionally Scandinavian in design, Skargaarden also draws inspiration from a wide range of sources such as the American shaker style and Bauhaus. The brand works according to the motto “less is more”, making ideas tangible. One should be able to immediately grasp the concept of a piece, it should not be an intellectual process. Skargaarden’s design exudes a sense of simplicity, characterized by genuine craftsmanship, both in terms of production and choice of materials. Skargaarden collaborates with several of Scandinavia’s leading designers, such as Alexander Lervik and Emma Olbers. Over the years, Skargaarden has won several accolades and nominations. In 2014, the three chairs Resö, Oxnö, and Grinda were nominated for the prestigious German Design Awards and the Anholt collection won the same award in 2020.
