Fredrik Nielsen is a Swedish artist, and glassblower who brings an unique style to the traditional craft of glassblowing. With his one-of-a-kind expression, Nielsen’s glass art finds its form in his raw studio in Årsta, southern Stockholm. With elements and inspiration from graffiti, music, pop, and fashion culture, he creates glass objects outside the traditional frames of reference.
Fredrik Nielsen is a pioneering Swedish glass artist who pushes the limits of traditional glassblowing. With training at Orrefors in Sweden and Pilchuck Glass School in the USA, Nielsen blends his expert craftsmanship with influences from graffiti, music, and pop culture. The result is a series of bold, raw creations that challenge conventional perceptions of the medium.
”How I treat and work with glass is the framework for my style and who I am. Several of my art objects possess secret treasures that are hidden inside the object”, Fredrik Nielsen explains.
Fredrik is constantly working to find new ways of working with glass, his processes are influenced by the experimental and continuously result in truly unique objects. The heavy materials and the raw and noisy environment in which Fredrik’s shapes and objects come to life are fundamental in the creation.
The sculpture on the left is titled You’re Not the Only One and was showcased in the exhibition Mixed Emotions in Stockholm. Later, it was also presented at the Seoul Museum of Craft, where the Loewe Foundation organized an exhibition. Additionally, it has been exhibited in Bornholm, Denmark, as part of the European Glass Context, followed by BeCraft in Belgium, and in Munich, where it was eventually sold to an art collector in Hungary.
”I want to create with my whole body and physically experience each part taking shape. Each new object is like its own competition, where the race can last several years before the art object reaches the finish line and has set new limits for what is possible to design with the material”, Nielsen says.
Nielsen’s glasswork is highly praised and recognized both on the national and international design and art scene. In Sweden, his creations have even adorned Swedish stamps for 2025 that are sent all over the world. Nielsen’s works have been exhibited and represented in public collections all over the world, such as the National Museum, Sweden, Corning Museum of Glass in New York, USA, Ariana Museum, Switzerland, Tore G Wärenstams Stiftelse, Sweden, the Vessel Gallery in London, Dunkers Kulturhus in Helsingborg, and Millesgården in Stockholm, and in several private collections in USA, Sweden, and Finland.
The iconic wine glasses have become a hallmark for Fredrik. These originated from the need for the set table, which Fredrik believes is always an interesting angle for all artists.
The glasses have evolved over time, and as they become more and more impossible to drink from, they also serve as an exploration of the object’s relationship to its surroundings — ”the piece’s relation to its stand.”
– The artworks can be seen as expensive wine glasses or relatively cheap sculptures. One of Stockholm’s finest restaurants, Persona, serves drinks from them at the end of the evenings, concludes Fredrik.
