In spring 2024, Abstracta and multi-award-winning designer Khodi Feiz introduced the sculptural Vika Floor Screen with light, which combines atmospheric light with a high-performance acoustic solution. The floor screen was followed by Vika Pendant Light, with the same characteristics and functionality. At this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan, Abstracta will launch the latest addition to the collection: Vika Wall Light
Acoustic lighting is a relatively new type of interior category, and together with Khodi Feiz, Abstracta has undoubtedly pushed the boundaries of what these products can be.
”The potential of a wall light with acoustic functionality is great but also obvious when you think about it. In corridors and larger rooms, both mood-creating light and effective sound-dampening are needed. Vika Wall Light fulfils an important function here by breaking up the sound path and naturally reducing disturbances. It thus becomes a powerful complement to other acoustic solutions,” says Linus Berglund, Marketing Manager at Abstracta, and adds:
”In home environments and lounges, it can be used to enhance the feeling of spatial height and to create a warm and inviting feeling, while in office landscapes and hotel corridors, it serves both as a guide and as part of the room’s visual identity.”
When Amsterdam-based designer Khodi Feiz created Vika, the vision was to develop a small-scale solution that still had a big effect, with a basic form that was as simple as it was ingenious. Vika is built on the principle of basic modularity, centered around a single acoustic lighting element that can be combined and repeated in different ways to create different functions, making Vika a highly flexible solution.
”One of the strengths of Khodi’s design lies in the family approach to product development. By working with a coherent design language, the development of new products becomes a natural continuation, rather than an isolated process. Thanks to Vika’s simple and well-thought-out basic shape, there are many possible variations, where each design feels natural. This is precisely Khodi’s strength as a designer – to create versatile expressions that can be adapted to different environments and needs with few, carefully considered design elements,” says Linus Berglund.
In both design and choice of materials, Vika combines sustainability with international expressiveness and Scandinavian simplicity and timelessness. Vika Wall Light consists of a sound-absorbing core of recycled and recyclable PET and is covered with acoustic felt in Texfel, which is available in several selected colours, where a lighter fabric gives a stronger light, and a darker one a more subdued lighting. The panel is shaped like a folded wing with a soft, glowing and fully integrated LED light. This creates a space that encapsulates and absorbs both low and high-frequency sounds while hiding the light source itself. The indirect, atmospheric light creates a cosy and inspiring atmosphere.
”Vika Wall Light can be mounted both vertically and horizontally – vertically in a repetitive pattern or horizontally in a line – and provides diffuse ambient lighting while improving the acoustic environment in offices, cafés, restaurants, public spaces and homes. The combination of the soft felt panels in different colours and the integrated lighting creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere that contributes to overall well-being,” says Khodi Feiz and continues:
”It’s easy to imagine Vika products in cafés, restaurants and meeting rooms. But I dare say it would also be wonderful to have them at home, because they give the room such a cosy warmth.”
Since it can be mounted both vertically and horizontally, Vika Wall Light offers a flexible solution that is easy to adapt to different room types and needs. Its relatively large sound-absorbing surface reduces reverberation and sound diffusion, making it particularly effective in environments where many people are present at the same time.
And the applications are almost limitless. Vika Wall Light improves speech intelligibility in office environments and meeting rooms and reduces distracting background noise. In restaurants and hotels, it contributes to a more relaxed atmosphere by dampening noise and echoes. And if placed in corridors and open spaces, it breaks up sound waves and reduces sound reflections from hard surfaces.
